Chronic use can lead to physical dependence, liver damage, and withdrawal symptoms that may require medical supervision.OpioidsOpioidsA class of drugs that includes prescription painkillers (oxycodone, hydrocodone) and illicit drugs like heroin. Highly addictive and typically injected, snorted, or smoked. Withdrawal can be intensely uncomfortable, and overdose risk is significant, especially with fentanyl contamination.FentanylFentanylA synthetic opioid up to 100 times more potent than morphine. Originally developed for severe pain management, illicit fentanyl is now a leading cause of overdose deaths due to its extreme potency.CocaineCocaineA powerful stimulant derived from coca leaves that increases dopamine levels in the brain. It produces intense but short-lived euphoria and carries serious cardiovascular risks. Available as powder or crack cocaine.MethamphetamineMethamphetamineA potent synthetic stimulant that affects the central nervous system. Commonly known as meth or crystal meth, it produces intense energy and euphoria but causes severe dental, neurological, and psychological damage with prolonged use.BenzodiazepinesBenzodiazepinesA class of prescription sedatives (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin) used for anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. Physical dependence develops quickly, and withdrawal can be medically dangerous without proper tapering.KratomKratomA tropical plant whose leaves contain compounds with opioid-like effects. Used for pain relief and mood enhancement, it carries dependence potential and withdrawal symptoms similar to opioids.MarijuanaMarijuanaAlso known as cannabis, it is the most commonly used federally illicit substance.
